Frequently Asked Questions
Manual Therapy includes hands on treatment techniques that are used by licensed health care providers such as chiropractors, physiotherapists and massage therapists to treat musculoskeletal injuries. Examples of manual therapy are soft tissue massage, joint manipulation, joint mobilization and stretching.
Manual therapy can help reduce the effects of stress on the body, decrease muscle tension, improve blood flow and circulation, increase joint range of motion and flexibility. All of these can affect and reduce an individuals experience of pain.
Patients with musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain, neck pain, joint pain, muscle strains, and sprains can benefit from manual therapy. Patients may also seek out manual therapy on a month to month basis to help reduce the long term effects of stress on their body.
Manual Therapy is generally considered safe when performed by a licensed and trained professional. However, like any medical treatment, there is always a risk of side effects and complications, particularly if the treatment is performed improperly. Our health care professionals perform a detailed physical examination to reduce the risk of adverse effects to treatment and to make sure that patients receive the most appropriate treatment plan based on their complaint.
The first visit will begin with a conversation regarding your primary complaint so the manual therapist can better understand the problem. A physical examination will be performed which includes a standing movement assessment as well as a joint specific evaluation that is performed with the patient laying on a treatment table. A detailed explanation of the problem as well as the proposed treatment plan will be discussed with you prior to beginning treatment. Patients can stop at anytime if they feel uncomfortable or ask questions throughout the assessment.
Loose fitting clothing such as t-shirt and shorts are ideal to wear to your appointment. You can bring a change of clothes and change in our private washroom.
Possible side effects of manual therapy include temporary soreness, bruising, or discomfort in the treated area. These symptoms should subside within 24-48 hours.
We do not offer direct billing at this time. Upon payment, we provide you with a receipt which can be submitted to your insurance provider for reimbursement.
Coverage for manual therapy services varies by insurance provider and plan. It is best to check with your insurance provider to determine what types of services are covered and what the requirements are for reimbursement.
The number of visits can vary depending on the individual and the condition being treated. Some people may only need a single treatment, while others may need ongoing care. The frequency of visits will depend on the severity of the condition and the rate of improvement.
